Preschool vs Childcare vs Community Preschool in NSW: What's the Difference?
Choosing early education in NSW can feel confusing. Some services call themselves childcare centres, others are community preschools, and some long day care services deliver dedicated preschool programs.
The most important question isn't simply what a centre calls itself. It's what your child will experience each day, which ages the service supports, how the program is delivered and whether the hours and fees suit your family.
What is long day care?
Long day care services generally operate extended hours and may care for children across several age groups. Many provide quality early childhood education and preschool programs, including programs delivered by qualified early childhood teachers. Eligible families may access the Australian Government Child Care Subsidy (CCS).
What is a community preschool?
Community preschools are generally not-for-profit services focused on early childhood education before school. Many operate during school terms and for shorter daily hours, although arrangements differ by service. Eligible services can receive NSW Start Strong funding and families may qualify for fee relief under the applicable rules.
Can a long day care service be a dedicated preschool?
Yes. A service's regulatory classification and its educational focus are not necessarily the same thing. A long day care service can choose to focus exclusively on preschool-aged children and offer an intentional educational program throughout the day.
Miss Parker's Preschool is an example: we're a purpose-built preschool exclusively for children aged 3–5, with extended hours and CCS eligibility for qualifying families.
Comparing the models
| Question | Long day care | Community preschool | Miss Parker's Preschool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ages | Often broader age range | Usually preschool ages | Exclusively 3–5 |
| Daily hours | Generally extended | Often shorter | 7:30am–5:30pm |
| Operating year | Usually most of the year | Often school terms | 50 weeks |
| CCS | May apply to eligible families | Generally not applicable | Available to eligible families |
| NSW preschool fee relief | Depends on funding and eligibility | Depends on funding and eligibility | Confirm current service participation before claiming |
| Educational approach | Varies by centre | Varies by preschool | Purposeful play and intentional teaching throughout the day |
These are common patterns, not guarantees about any individual service.
Is community preschool cheaper than long day care?
Not necessarily for every family. Compare the actual out-of-pocket cost after applicable subsidies or fee relief, the hours you need and what's included. A shorter session can have a lower daily fee but a different effective hourly cost.
The Child Care Subsidy is administered under Commonwealth rules, while NSW Start Strong is a separate state funding program. Eligibility and amounts depend on the relevant program and service participation; don't assume a family receives both automatically.

Seven questions to ask when touring a preschool
1. Which ages attend the service?
2. Who plans and delivers the educational program?
3. How are learning and development observed and communicated?
4. What happens throughout a typical day?
5. How does the service support confidence and Kindergarten transition?
6. What hours, holidays, meals and inclusions are offered?
7. What will our family actually pay after applicable support?
The Miss Parker's difference
At Miss Parker's in Glenhaven, preschool isn't a brief activity added to a wider childcare day. Our entire environment is designed for children aged 3–5, informed by our founder's experience teaching in NSW primary schools.
Families can access extended care hours, a 50-week operating year and CCS where eligible, while children benefit from a consistent focus on school readiness through play, intentional teaching and everyday routines.

Frequently asked questions
Is preschool the same as daycare in NSW?
Not always. “Preschool” can describe an educational program or a service model, while long day care is a service type. Ask how the actual program operates.
Can you get CCS at a preschool?
CCS may apply at an approved centre-based day care service for eligible families. It generally does not apply to a stand-alone community preschool.
Are community preschools better than childcare centres?
Quality depends on the individual service, its educators, learning environment and approach. Compare actual experiences rather than assuming one label guarantees better education.

# Recommended on-site implementation
- Add Wix Blog to the existing Studio site, rather than rebuilding the website.
- Use one parent-facing category such as Parent Guides & School Readiness; optionally distinguish Hills District Family Guides and Preparing for Kindergarten.
- Add an unobtrusive homepage link and footer link to Parent Resources.
- Add original local photographs and accurate image alt text. For the playground article, add verified individual playground examples and council-source links before publication.
- Verify the School Readiness page URL and the blog post URL convention in the live site before inserting internal links.
- Add visible author and review dates; use Article/BlogPosting structured data and breadcrumbs where supported. FAQ sections should help readers, not be used to promise rich search results.
- Avoid publishing unverified claims about fees, funding approval or specific facilities.
- Submit the resulting URLs for indexing in Google Search Console and monitor impressions, search queries and enquiries.
